Illinois Documents are shelved in three different locations, based on specific subject matter. These locations are the Illinois Alcove (main floor), Reference area (main floor), and the documents area in the basement. The catalog record for each item will indicate the location and call number. If you need assistance locating an item, our Reference Librarians will be happy to help.
Documents do not circulate. A scanner is available for use in the library.
As an Illinois Depository, the Law Library maintains a collection of official state documents pertaining to Illinois law and government. For anyone interested in Illinois law, this collection is a valuable resource. Debates of the Illinois General Assembly, state Budget Summary, and Illinois Administrative Code (rules of state agencies) are some of examples of what you will find. This guide contains a current list of documents held at the Law Library and will help you locate print copies or directly access documents online.
The Illinois Depository Program was established by the Illinois General Assembly in 1967, as a way to provide the public with greater access to government information. All state agenices are required to deposit copies of their publications with the State Library for its collections. Copies are then distributed to the 22 participating Depository Libraries. Documents are now also issued in electronic format whenever feasible. Although state documents cover a variety of topics, the Law Library keeps only those related to the subject of law. If you are interested in other topics, please note that the Main Library receives and catalogs 100 percent of published Illinois Documents.
