This book looks at why and how states should legally ban LGBTQ+ 'conversion therapy'. Few states have legislated against the practice, with many currently considering its legal ban. Banning 'Conversion Therapy' brings together leading academics, legal and medical practitioners, policymakers, and activists to illuminate the legislative and non-legislative steps that are required to protect individuals from the harms of 'conversion therapy' in different contexts. The book considers how best to address this complex and interdisciplinary legal problem which cuts across human rights law, criminal law, family law, and socio-legal studies, and which represents one of the key contemporary problems of LGBTQ+ equality and national and international human rights activism.

Beware Euphoria uncovers the roots of America's moral obsession with drug regulation, offering a lively and fascinating history of the nation's racialized fear of intoxication. Challenging the idea that early antidrug laws in the US arose from racial animus, George Fisher instead shows in textured detail how US drug laws were driven by a deep-seated cultural taboo against euphoria and a preoccupation with white moral integrity. From nineteenth-century opium dens to the war on cocaine and cannabis, and more, Fisher offers a vivid tour of the sites of conflict, along with a convincing case for how the moral discourses and social contexts of the day pit drugs against the law. Bringing this history up to the present, Fisher shows how the racial dynamic has changed dramatically. As harsher penalties swell prisons with mostly nonwhite dealers, antidrug laws have come under renewed scrutiny as a tool of racial oppression. The book closes with an examination of cannabis legalization, driven in part by the movement for racial justice.

A history of the struggle for debtors' rights from the Civil War to the Great Depression What can be taken from someone who has borrowed money and cannot repay? What do the victims of misfortune owe to their lenders, and what can they keep for themselves? The answers to those questions, immensely important for debtors, creditors, and society at large, have changed over time. The Price of Misfortune examines the cause of debtors' rights in the modern United States and the struggles of reformers who fought to establish financial freedoms in law.   Daniel Platt shows how, in the wake of the Civil War, a range of advocates drew potent analogies between slavery, imprisonment for debt, and the experiences of wage garnishment and property foreclosure. He traces the ways those analogies were used to campaign for bold new protections for debtors, keeping them secure in their labor, property, and personhood. Yet, as Platt demonstrates, those reforms tended to assume as their ideal borrower someone who was white, propertied, and male. In subsequent decades, the emancipatory promise of debtors' rights would be tested as women, wage earners, and African Americans seized on their language to challenge other structural inequalities: the dependency of marriage, the exploitation of industrial capitalism, and the oppression of Jim Crow. By reconstructing these forgotten developments--and recovering the experiences of indebted farmwives, sharecroppers, and wage workers--The Price of Misfortune narrates a new history of inequality, coercion, and law amid the early financialization of American capitalism.

The intended focus of The Problem with Capital Punishment and Why It Should Be Abolished in America is to take a harsh, critical look at theories in support of the use of this form of punishment and expose the truth about capital punishment: it is extremely costly; it is arbitrarily applied; there have been too many innocent persons exonerated from death row; and the only consistency with execution seems to be that of the mentally ill, the poor, and those without adequate legal representation and by using methods that are inhumane and "cruel and unusual". This book shows that our current system of capital punishment is fraught with error, insanely expensive, and administered in such a manner that the possibility of executing a completely innocent person is not only possible but likely if we continue upon our present course. After reading this book, the reader will be left with no reasonable doubt that the time has come to abolish capital punishment in America.
