Generative AI chatbots, primarily ChatGPT, have caused various problems and induced scandals since mainstream use has been possible. These scandals range from media websites getting caught using AI-generated work to lawyers using AI-fabricated sources in federal court. All these events share the crux of AI being used as a replacement for human expertise and knowledge, instead of as a tool to help augment human abilities.
Besides the human error of relying on generative AI completely, AI has consistently found itself in conflict with the legal concepts of copyright, defamation, and fraud. Generative AI technology, especially deepfake images, video, and voices, goes beyond the scope of current legal safeguards.
As generative AI has such wide-reaching and lasting impact, there has been plenty of conjecture and theorizing about its potential benefits and horrible consequences.
